Cartilage and Bone
Intramembranous ossification, Skull, Kitten
Intramembranous ossification. Under X10 objective,
locate the irregular trabeculae in the centre of the section. At a
higher magnification(X40) examine the surface of the trabeculae.
Identify the osteoblasts.
What do you see in the bony matrix of the trabeculae? Do you see any
Haversian systems?
Are there any osteoclasts in your section? They may be found on the surface of the trabeculae.
On both sides of the trabeculae are present bundles of collagen fibres.
Loose connective tissue may be found between the bony trabeculae. Do you
see any blood vessels in the connective tissue?
Draw a trabeculae with osteoblasts,
osteoclasts
and osteocytes.
